Live at Undici Undici, Mesa, AZ, April 12, 1996
Concert review by Martin Mathis
For the first time since their 1996 European Tour One Foot In
The Grave played locally again, this time in Mesa, Arizona at
Undici Undici. And what a homecoming it was! The place, a café,
was unusually packed for their all-evening two-set performance
and the band was primed to give everybody a lesson in punk rock,
solid entertainment and audience interaction:
Not only did JoDina stage-dive (ok, after arranging to be lifted up from a chair) twice over the heads of young male
admirers (not repeating the "crotch-neck incident" from
one of the tour's gigs), she also let herself be carried on this
writer's shoulders, pulled (slam) dance partners up to the stage and
rocked out on chairs and tables.
The band appeared as a solid entity having a grip on their songs
and shticks which included Lowell getting dressed to leave because
it gets to tiring and boring for his 77 years of age and shmoozing
up a birthday girl from the audience during "On the Cover of the
Rolling Stone", drummer Dave Cook doing a blues/jazz number with JoDina taking
over the drums and "Spike" playing guitar behind his head and between
JoDina's - erm - knees.
Material from both albums was combined and cover songs like "Pinhead"
by the Ramones, "Elvis is everywhere" by Mojo Nixon
and two Elvis tunes were added. To the special enjoyment of yours truly Ramones
fan they answered the audience's "we want more" screams with an encore
and a repeat of "Pinhead" and "Menopause".
The audience was a lively and refreshing mixture of punkers, rockers, shirts and
ties, casuals, curiosity seekers, oldsters and youngsters.
If my wife says "They were much better than how I remembered
them" ;) and her friend who came along says "Thanks for
taking me along, this was hilarious!", I know it means something.
It definitely shows again that The Foot is a live and very alive band and the
more people come to see them, the more fun is had by all!
